A novel superconducting glass state in disordered thin films in Clogston limit
نویسنده
چکیده
A theory of mesoscopic fluctuations in disordered thin superconducting films in a parallel magnetic field is developed. At zero temperature and at a sufficiently strong magnetic field, the superconducting state undergoes a phase transition into a state characterized by superfluid densities of random signs, instead of a spin polarized disordered Fermi liquid phase. Consequently, in this regime, random supercurrents are spontaneously created in the ground state of the system, which belongs to the same universality class as the two dimensional XY spin glass. As the magnetic field increases further, mesoscopic pairing states are nucleated in an otherwise homogeneous spin polarized disordered Fermi liquid. The statistics of these pairing states is universal depending on the sheet conductance of the 2D film. Suggested PACS index category: 05.20-y, 82.20-w Typeset using REVTEX 1

Measurement of conduction-electron polarization via the pairing resonance.
We show that the pairing resonance in the Pauli-limited normal state of ultrathin superconducting Al films provides a spin-resolved probe of conduction-electron polarization in thin magnetic films. A superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet tunneling junction is used to measure the density of states in supercritical parallel magnetic fields that are well beyond the Clogston-Chandresekhar limit, thu...

We report on a study of epitaxially grown ultrathin Pb films that are only a few atoms thick and have parallel critical magnetic fields much higher than the expected limit set by the interaction of electron spins with a magnetic field, that is, the Clogston-Chandrasekhar limit. The epitaxial thin films are classified as dirty-limit superconductors because their mean-free paths, which are limite...

In this paper we develop a theory of mesoscopic fluctuations in disordered thin superconducting films in a parallel magnetic field. At zero temperature and sufficiently strong magnetic field the system undergoes a phase transition into a state characterized by a superfluid density, which is random in sign. Consequently, in this region, random supercurrents are spontaneously created in the groun...
متن کامل0 Fluctuation Effects in High Sheet Resistance Superconducting Films ∗
As the normal state sheet resistance, Rn, of a thin film superconductor increases, its superconducting properties degrade. For Rn ≃ h/4e superconductivity disappears and a transition to a nonsuperconducting state occurs. We present electron tunneling and transport measurements on ultrathin, homogeneously disordered superconducting films in the vicinity of this transition. The data provide stron...
متن کاملThree-dimensional calculations of the magnetic fields in a finite superconducting hollow cylinder in an applied axial magnetic field
In this study, a set of self-consistent coupled-integral equations for the local magnetic flux and current distributions in a finite superconducting hollow cylinder under an axial magnetic field has been directly derived by using the Biot-Savart law within the framework of the critical-state model. The equations were first solved numerically in the three-dimensional space before obtaining the h...
